Friends of Rivers, Peel

We are a community organisation formed to:

FoR PEEL Achievements

  1. FoR Peel was awarded the prestigious Telstra/Channel 10 Environmental Award for May 2008 .
  2. Friends of Rivers, Peel in partnership with Peel Preservation Group, Department of Water and Pinjarra Senior High School carried out a major planting on a 300 metre section of the southern reach of Wilgie Creek in North Yunderup
  3. Successfully lobied the Shire of Murray to change the septic tanks on Culleenup Island public toilets and caretakers residence to alternative treatment units.
  4. Application for a Federal Government grant under the National Heritage Trust scheme. These funds will be applied to the rehabilitation of a section of the riverbank at North Yunderup. If successful further grants will be sought to continue this rehabilitation process along these waterways.
  5. Production of Bumper-Stickers to be sold as a fund-raiser and to increase public awareness.
  6. Public awareness display and petition at the 2002 Mandurah Boat Show where we sought public support for a petition to govt to make both the Serpentine and Murray Rivers low/no wash zones for their navigable length. In excess of 1800 signatures were obtained over the three days of the show.
  7. Changing of Boat Speed. At a meeting on the 14th of January 2003 Minister Allanah MacTiernan agreed to FoR PEELS request to change the max speed in the Serpentine and Murray Rivers to 5 knots effective from the 1st of Feb 2003.
  8. FoR PEEL's application for a National HeritageTrust grant is successful and work started on the project in April 2003.
  9. Production of the Website.
  10. For,Peel is involved in Clean Up Australia day every year.
  11. FoR,Peel met with the Environment Minister Mark McGowan on the 23rd of May 2006 re getting Water Corp to enforce their legislation.
    Unfortunately neither Mr McGowannor his staff haven't found the time to acknowledge that the meeting took place and provide us with any feed back or answers to questions asked at that meeting. Disappointing that this attitude is coming from our elected representatives
  12. FoRPeel completed a joint project with the Pinjarra Senior High School on a section of foreshore on the Murray River in the Pinjarra Townsite.This project was funded by LandCare and Mitre 10 and Friends of Rivers,Peel Inc.
  13. In conjunction with the Peel Harvey Catchment Council and Fairbridge Friends of Rivers,Peel has co-coordinated and assisted with the installation of  500 metres of wash boards on the island foreshores of the Murray River Delta.
